Chapter Two - An Extra Special Day
After Tim's Dad had finished his meal and awakened from his nap, he was refreshed and ready to finish the bible reading that Tim had asked him earlier to complete. Tim was interested in the list of things God did in the first week of the history that he and Linda were recording.
Dad opened his Bible and started reading from Genesis 2:1, "Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. (2) By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day God rested from all His work. (3)And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
Linda asked, "What does holy mean, Dad?
"I think that means extra special to God, but I'm not sure exactly what it means, but we can find out together." He said as he was reaching for the dictionary.
He read, "belonging to, derived from, or associated with divine power; sacred.
Tim asked, "But everything He did that week was done with divine power and it was all blessed, so what makes this the only day that God made holy in the first seven days?
Dad read further in the dictionary. He said, "It seems that this day was set apart for a special Holy Day because God was creating a day for special worship.
"So", Tim exclaimed, God created a day for resting and for us to worship Him in a special way, too."
"Looks that way," Dad spoke thoughtfully.
Tim wrote on the list 7-God rested and blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
Mom said, "Let's read further."
So Dad read chapter two of Genesis. This chapter told of many things that Tom imagined as Dad read the chapter. Tim imagined a vapor coming from the ground leaving drops of water on each plant and shrub of various sized and colored leaves. Tim thought of the many different fragrances in his grandmother's garden. He especially liked the smell the geranium and the tube roses. He remembered the little creatures in the garden like the little red lady beadle, the crickets, and once when he turned a small stone over, he found a multicolored salamander. There was so many colors that it reminded him of the results of a small child playing with oil paints.
As Dad read on, he heard the names of rivers with familiar sounding names; the Tigris and the Euphrates. These rivers flowed with others from the river watering the Garden of Eden.
The Lord took the man and put him in the garden to work and take care of it and to eat the fruit produced in the garden, reserving only one tree for Himself, alone. This tree was called, the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Tim thought that it must have been very important for the Lord God who knew what good and evil really is to keep this one thing for Himself. Thinking of all the other plants and trees that were there, Tim decided quickly that God was very generous with the man that he created, because he could live forever on the variety of food available for him, but if he took from God's tree, he would die.
Linda whispered quietly while her Dad was reading, "I hope he remembers which tree belongs to God."
Linda's Mom hugged her close, and Tim looked at Linda, and he wondered if the man would forget and eat of the wrong tree.
(18) The Lord God said, "It is not good for man to be alone, I will make a helper suitable for him."
"Wow", Tim said, "I'll bet that's where doctors got the idea to put a person to sleep and take out defective parts!"
Dad answered, "Don't forget, Tim, woman was not made from the ground like every other creature, including man. God could have formed her out of the ground as easily, but He made her in a special way, because He wanted her to the same as man. God did not take a defective part to make her because Adam was made perfectly. She was exactly the same as man; perfectly made."
"This next chapter is labeled, The Fall of Man, in my bible, so we will stop here and get into that subject later. We all seem to enjoy studying together," Dad remarked as he laid his bible on the table.
"Well, at least tell us how he fell" Linda pleaded.
"Your Papa is ready to stop for awhile", he explained, as he picked Linda up and sat her on his knee.
Tim got on his Dad's other knee.
